A 360Storyline is a collection of experiments that together let students engage in science in an authentic manner through the use of relevant phenomena. Each experiment in a 360Storyline builds on things learned in the preceding experiments until students develop a final, working explanation or model of the phenomenon. Every lab in any 360Storyline is completely editable and supported by videos and simulations.

Volcanoes
Lead students to a written understanding/working model of volcanoes. Around 75 percent of the world’s volcanoes are located in an area called the ring of fire—a series of tectonic plate boundaries that nearly outlines the Pacific Ocean. Most volcanoes are formed when two tectonic plates collide and one subducts into the mantle and is melted. The melted material forms magma, which floats back to the surface through the process of convection and forms volcanoes.

What Students Do

Lab 1—Investigate the Rock Cycle
Students track a rock through stages of the rock cycle, moving from one station to another based on a roll of the rock cycle die at each station to illustrate how matter is cycled. The various stages experienced and the amount of time spent at each are recorded.

Lab 2—Observe Convection Currents
Students explore the process of convection by developing a working model using a mixture of alcohol and brine.

Lab 3—The Rise and Fall of Pangaea
Students arrange both continental and oceanic plates based off historical positions and several forms of evidence to illustrate how the surface of the Earth has changed throughout history.

Lab 4—Construct Fault Models
Students create a model landform section consisting of multiple layers to study the movement of normal, reverse and strike-slip faults. The movements are simulated and sketched, and their impact is explored.

Students must drive the learning forward by developing procedures and asking questions. Each storyline is supported by editable documents that force students to think about how the data they collect relate to an individual experiment’s investigative phenomenon and how the data they collect in a series of labs relate to a broader, anchoring phenomenon.
