Running a bioassay and understanding the results are critical skills in environmental science. Environmental scientists use bioassays to study the effects of chemicals on biological organisms and to estimate their relative toxicity. In this kit, students carry out a cooperative class experiment to determine the effect of different concentrations of salt solutions on the growth and development of lettuce seeds. Interpreting the results allows students to predict the possible environmental effects of agricultural runoff, drilling and mining wastes and industrial discharge. Students may be surprised at the “toxicity” of ordinary table salt! Kit contains detailed procedures, Teacher Notes and reproducible student worksheets.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
