Water is an essential resource to humans. When trace amounts of certain chemicals enter our water supply, serious health problems may occur. In this activity, students will test for the presence of several types of simulated polluting chemical ions, including chlorides, chromates, iron, lead, phosphates and sulfates. Students will also write chemical equations and test for unknown contaminating ions. Kit includes a detailed background section on sources and effects of water pollution, reproducible student data handouts, complete teacher notes with sample data and answers and enough chemicals needed to perform 300 tests for each ion. Tests are for simulated water samples. Do not use with real water samples.
Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable 24-well reaction plates are recommended and available separately.
